Homegrown Revolution - Radical Change Taking Root

urbanhomesteadIn the midst of densely urban downtown Pasadena, radical change is taking root. For over twenty years, the Dervaes family has been transforming their home into an urban homestead.

They harvest three tons of organic food annually from their 1/10 acre garden, while incorporating back- to-basics practices, solar energy and biodiesel.

About the Film: The original version of Homegrown Revolution® was put together for a lecture Jules Dervaes gave at the University of California Los Angeles in October 2007 on the topic of Slow Food. It received a wildly enthusiastic response from the students and, subsequently, attracted an avid following on YouTube, with 500,000 views to date. Watch the movie!

Urban Farming - Food Grown Right in Your Backyard

It was created find the answer to one simple question: “Does anybody need help setting up a vegetable garden?” In the winter of 2006, Colin McCrate moved back to Seattle after spending a few years working on small, family-owned organic vegetable farms.

Although he was ready for city life, he didn’t want to stop growing food. He built a greenhouse, started some sugar snap peas, and began making trips to the Ballard Farmer’s Market to find an answer to his question.

A few months later, Brad Halm moved to Seattle from central Pennsylvania, and soon after the two began building backyard farms for a small crop of adventurous customers.

Why 'Self-Sufficiency' Should Replace 'Sustainability' in the Environmental Movement

Joes-houseThe environmental movement is in love with the word 'sustainable'. Admittedly, it's a wonderful word in the purest sense, meaning;  1. capable of being sustained, 2. capable of being continued with minimal long-term effect on the environment. 

Who doesn't want those capabilities? Yet, 'sustainability', like everything else good and pure, has seemingly been hijacked by the ruling oligarchs as a way to impose more top-down control of society. Passionate environmentalists are beginning to realize that the only way to affect real change is by becoming sustainable individuals through self-sufficiency.

This focus on individual empowerment will naturally lead to increased liberty, as it minimizes the tactics used by mega-cartels and government to control our core needs of food, electricity, or medicine.  Living in an environmentally and socially sustainable world should be an obvious goal, but it won't work if imposed at the barrel of a gun.
